Ashley Akins, DVM

Professional Services Veterinarian,
Upstate NY (NY, PA)

Dr. Ashley Akins joined the Merck Animal Health family in 2024 after more than a decade of fulfilling commitment to small animal clinical practice. She prides herself as a trusted partner in pet care, combining her extensive knowledge and compassionate approach to provide the highest standard of medical treatment. Dr. Akins is a strong advocate for collaborative care and shows the unique ability to connect with both her animal patients and their human families by empowering pet owners to make informed decisions about their furry companions’ health. She believes that effective communication with pet owners is as crucial as the technical aspects of veterinary medicine and is looking forward to bringing this cohesive approach to her work as a Professional Services Veterinarian.

Dr. Akins completed her undergraduate studies at Auburn University followed up by supplemental coursework at Northeastern prior to proudly attending Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Akins then went on to complete a rotating internship prior to joining the Mars family at Banfield Pet Hospital.  Dr. Akins has held many leadership roles in her career but takes the greatest joy from being able to passionately share knowledge with clients and colleagues.  She credits her dynamic and approachable perspective on medicine to her diverse work background in microbiology research, critical care nursing, wildlife field work, and even customer service.

When Dr. Akins is not at work, she enjoys spending time outdoors, gardening, fly-fishing, and camping with her family. She believes the secret to professional success is a healthy work-life balance, and a genuine desire to make the world a better place by leaving it better than we found it.  As she looks to the future, she is eager to further her impact in the veterinary community, continually seeking opportunities to learn, grow, and advocate for the animals she loves.

“An informed pet owner is an empowered pet owner.  We need to meet people where they’re at and give them the opportunity and the tools to make the best choices.”
