Lori Schega Fernandez, DVM
Professional Services Veterinarian,
Bayou Country (AR, LA, MS)
From a young age, Dr. Schega was certain that becoming a veterinarian was her true calling. Her deep commitment for helping both animals and their owners has been the driving force behind her career, and it continues to provide immense personal fulfillment. Veterinary medicine has given Dr. Schega the opportunity to make a significant and lasting impact in the lives of both the animals she cares for and the people who love them.
Dr. Lori Schega is a small animal veterinarian with 27+ years of clinical practice. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of New Orleans, followed by her veterinary studies at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Since graduating, Dr. Schega has remained deeply committed to providing exceptional, compassionate care to her patients. After practicing in New Orleans, she moved to Orlando, Florida, where she continued her career, but ultimately chose to return to Louisiana to be closer to family. For the past 20 years, Dr. Schega has practiced in the Baton Rouge area and her dedication to her patients and clients has made her a trusted name in the local veterinary community.
In January 2025, Dr. Schega transitioned to a new role with Merck Animal Health as a Professional Services Veterinarian. She now covers the Bayou Country Region, which includes Louisiana, Arkansas, and Southern Mississippi. In this new role, Dr. Schega is able to combine her love for veterinary medicine with cutting-edge innovations, helping to improve animal health and support veterinary professionals across a wider region.
“Loving animals is at the core of what we do, and veterinary medicine is the bridge that helps us care for them. Working at Merck Animal Health empowers me to bring both passion and cutting-edge science together, ensuring a healthier future for animals everywhere.”
#BeUnconditional
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Schega is married to her husband, Matt, and they have two children in college—a son at Auburn and a daughter at Texas A&M. Their family is completed by two beloved dogs: a mixed breed terrier named Jolie and a Boxer named Nina. When she’s not working, Dr. Schega enjoys spending time with family and attending sports events, especially Saints football games. Travel is also a passion of hers, and she cherishes every opportunity to explore new places, cultures, and experiences. Her passion for clinical practice is still there and you can also find Dr. Schega practicing veterinary medicine on occasional weekends.
